Phrase structure rules
The PS rules are general statements of the structure of language based on observation we have made concerning that structure.  The grammar contains a set of rules that generate the trees -
phrase structure rules

1. S            à NP VP
2. VP         à Vt NP PrepP
3. NP         à Det N
4. PrepP   à Prep NP

  1. Noun Phrase
Rules :
·         N                                 : Alice
·         Det + N                       : The cat
·         Det + N + PP              : A mouse in a cup
·         Det + Num + N           : Those two rabbits

  1. Prepossitional Phrase
Rules :
·         P                      : In
·         P + NP                        : Up the tree
·         P + NP                        : From a mouse in a cup

  1. Verb Phrase
Rules :
·         V                                 : Sleep
·         V + NP                        : Found a bone
·         V + PP                                    : Run into the room
·         V + NP + PP               : Sang a song in the shower



d.      Adjective Phrase
Rule :
·         Adv + Adj                  : So handsome

e.       Adverbial Phrase
Rule :
·         Adv + Adv                 : So beautiful
·         Deg + Adv                  : Very quickly
